Yesterday we had our IR & Tourism lecture..we have a discussion based on a case study of 'Using Tourism To Promote Peace On The Korean Peninsula; on Mt. Gumgang. It was indeed an interesting discussion and we're sort of debating the topic for the whole slot :p It was reported that tourism through the people to people level of diplomacy can assist in promoting peace in that country. It indicated that tourism has positively influenced the views of Southerners on both the people to people and govt to govt contact. On the other hand, it was alleged that the tourism receipts is used by the North for military purposes therefore rather than facilitating peace, tourism may have become an agent for further aggression.
Mmg interesting kamarin tu...there's one student said tourism will definitely promote peace and it will be successful in Korea too...dia bilang sbb bila ramai urg visit the place, definitely there'll be peace..also why the govt won't support it because it's a good purpose etc..bla..bla..bla...then our american friend responded, it's not necessary because Korea is a different case, which North Korea is a communist...mcm di Cuba, x bulih ckp sembarangan because there's no freedom of speech..if you are caught of talking bad things you may end up losing your job or put you in a jail etc...then my friend td tu defending her statement about peace etc...smpi mata si Jessica pun basar suda brbs mau debate haha...sudah la anak mata dia kaler biru :D ...then I responded to the discussion and supported the argument given by Jessica... I personally believed tourism could/might bring or promote peace to other countries but not exactly between north/south Korea....then my friend brbs x mau akun kalah hahaha..sia bukan mau menang but the fact is North Korea is a communist region so just imagine what would it be...maybe it works for other country but at the moment for Korea it may takes a long way to go...klu setakat people to people contact ja maybe they can have a good communication tp it's not mutual sbb so far only Southerners who have visited North Korea after the govt allowed them to do so, first for the purpose of visiting the relatives yg 'terpisah siang' (hahahaha sia teingat ni words terpisah siang ni sbb ada urg nyny lg isabella masa karaoke..blm lagi kana highlight tu word siang suda dia duluan..hahaha) ok now back to the subject :p well Northerns were not visiting the Southern part of Korea...although there were no hostile incidents happened while the visits but I think at this moment, the motive of main intention of bridging up the two places closer are still vague... maybe it's the people tp sia rasa susah jg mau influenced the govt of N.Korea...maybe I'm wrong too hehe.. then my classmate td masih jg pertahankan dia punya statement..well nothing wrong actually of defending our statements tp sia rasa dia x begitu tau psl Korea ...well i'm not well-versed too tp tau la sikit...then sia ckp, I agree with you tourism may bring peace to the country if they share same ideology e.g both are democratic where ppl are comfortable enough to visit without doubt... sia ckp mcm sia from malaysia come to visit Switzerland, I do not have any bad feelings sbb both countries are having the same ideas on it...then I just shared with them that I've actually visited Korea before (eksen sikit hahaha) then professor and my friend Salma tny, ko ada pgi??? I said yes and I know how the situation like...I've been up to the border of North/South which was known as DMZ or Demilitarized Zone...along the road there were military armed by guns standing left & right sides of the road... lps tu, tu kwn sia diam but I guess dia x puas hati hahaha...along the debating dia ckp if the place is visited by lot of people of course there will be no war! adididi...hahaha sia jwb sikit ja not necessarily...si Jessica pun suda jwb to oppose her...then professor asked me if I wanted to say something, I said no...hahaha....mau sia jwb tu not necessary klu ramai urg visit the place there'll be no war...maybe not war but a conflict etc...tp sia diam ja...sbb my friend yg ckp tu mcm marah suda kana lawan2 dia pny sakapan :p anyway I could be wrong on this .... and I didn't intend to oppose her because I don't like her tp mcm argument dia so naive bah ...ceh mcm la sia ni pandai pulok pdhl 2x5 ja :p
Then the discussion went on ....professor tny how about the condition of the tourism industry itself...si Salma ckp govt (South Korea) can just ignore ppl who wanted to visit the Northern part..siapa mau pgi, dia pigi....they can't control ppl from going...then professor bilang, so klu lebih ramai urg visit, govt buat xtau ja lah...are u suggesting that the govt buat x kisah ja even though the number of visitors are increasing...Salma bilang because tourism is being manipulated so baik buat xtau ja...then professor bilang knpa kasi biar sedangkan the ppl visiting the place is giving money to the N.Korea govt...etc etc...then si Salma bilang klu suda increase the number of ppl yg visit then manipulated the industry....don't tell the world about it...so I chipped in, how would u manipulate the industry, u can't hide the fact that ppl are visiting...especially when the industry is growing and a lot of ppl visiting the place every year...dia jwb klu suda tlmpau ramai then maybe don't provide facilities..jln raya pun ubah kasi kici ka or something smpi urg x bulih reach the place...hahahaha...lucu pulok...I said you cannot manipulate the situation..info are spreading..then ada 2-3 ppl behind yg responded jg tp drng ckp x kuat...in fact other italian friends mmg ada points mau ckp tp drng x tau mau express in english...this afternoon one of my group members for other subject ckp dia mmg mau support my statement which she agreed tp dia xtau mcm mana mau ckp..dia takut nnt dia guna salah words ....then kami bilang, ckp saja, klu salah mesti tu professor ckp salah...well sia pun bgtu, sia respond x ngam, prof akan ckp....then we said klu ko express your opinion at the same time u can also practice the language....kasian jg drng...well during the debate, si Jessica tny professor knpa in the first place South Korea funded the project of Mt. Gumgang...prof bilang sbb they intend to make a path for peace also to allow the southerners to visit their relatives yg mmg lama x jumpa...mcm mmg mau berbaik2 la so that Korea will be only Korea as a whole and is not divided into two...
